(Part 9)
The Promise to Israel Fulfilled. As we discussed in earlier parts, God made promises to the nation of Israel that have yet to be fulfilled. God’s promises were unconditional and would not be fulfilled until a Kingdom was established, on the throne of David, that once established will last forever. (Isaiah 9:6-7) The promises also make reference to the awareness of people of who Jesus is. In fulfillment of the New Covenant it is clearly stated that all of those in the nation Israel will “Know the Lord.” (Jer. 31:33-34) Neither of these promises has been achieved, but will be in the future. As we saw in Part 8 these will be true once the Lord returns and establish His Kingdom upon the earth. Since Jesus is of the line of David, he establishes the throne of David forever, and during the Kingdom all the Jews will know that Jesus is Lord. They will see Him as King with power.
Do Jesus Birth, Death, and Resurrection fulfill the Promise?
Some would suggest that even though the Old Testament teaches that Christ will return to establish a kingdom on the earth, that the New Testament contradicts this and teaches the opposite. Some rightfully will not accept that God would contradict Himself, but they still will not accept that God made the promises to the nation. Therefore, they contend that Christ fulfilled His promises to the nation through the church, and that his Kingdom has already been established while He is in heaven with the Father. We have already pointed out that God’s promises were to the nation of Israel and therefore this line of thinking also presents God as contradicting Himself. The only way this could be true is if Jesus somehow changed the promise through what he did, but what we find said in the New Testament does tells us just the opposite. In the first chapter of Luke we find the angel announcing to Mary that she is going to be the mother of the promised Messiah. You can see from this announcement what God’s perspective was and is of who Jesus was relative to the promises He had made to the nation.
Luke 1:31-33 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. 32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
As we read in Revelation 19 and 20, Jesus is coming and will establish this Kingdom and it will have not end. The Millennium is just a stepping stone into an eternity. The next part will be the last part and in it I will summarize my thoughts on why this long discussion on Premillennial doctrine is so important.
